Interesting! I wasn’t aware he was doing these. Coincidentally I’m re-reading Marvel’s The ‘Nam, and Vansant took over penciling for Michael Golden.

Yes… Escape to Gold Mountain was my debut graphic novel…and believe me, I never realized how much effort had went into one of these books. My utmost respect for all graphic novelists!

This looks almost Maus-ian! Very interested in the little known and little told story of the hardship of the Chinese in the frontier. I’ve only researched it a little, but they had a brilliant Mountain Of Gold exhibit a few years ago at the Autry Museum here in Los Angeles.

This is in fact not at all historically accurate and there are numerous articles discussing the appropriateness of the film copying this depiction of a native american that is completely made up. Kirby Sattler admits that he is not painting an individual based on historical fact, but is throwing together a romanticized fantasy image of a non-existent native. If you’re looking for Thomas Kinkade-esque images of native americans, he’s your guy. If you are looking for accurate depictions in art, I would suggest you look elsewhere.

Thanks for posting Courtney. I know in the show he’s “the doctor” but Doctor Who is a generic term for the character often used for identification purposes when talking about the show.
The writer and producer Steven Moffat refers to him as Doctor Who in the interview. So he seems happy with using that name for reference purposes. But technically he is “the doctor.” You’re correct.
